Boston Travel Guide – The FOOD

I am back with part two of my Boston Travel Guide!  And it’s what you have all been waiting for….the FOOD!!  While in Boston, I ate one of the BEST things I have ever eaten in my entire life!  So I will be sharing with you great places to eat…and one maybe to avoid.  Are you excited??  I am excited!

WHAT I ATE IN BOSTON

This post is all about what I ate while I was in Boston…if you missed my Boston Travel Guide – Part One, click HERE to catch up!  Part one is all about where I stayed and what I did during my trip to Boston.  Ok let’s eat!!

DAY #1

After Wendy I arrived in Boston, we quickly dumped our bags off at out hotel and walked over to….

Union Oyster House!  My sister is a huge fan of their cornbread and clam chowder, and I knew she was looking forward to our first dinner in Boston being at the Oyster House!  The Oyster House is America’s oldest restaurant, established in 1826, and the inside of the restaurant is very charming and has that old-time feel.  And it isn’t just Wendy who is a fan of the Oyster House…I got several recommendations from friends telling me this was a go-to place!

Click HERE to see the Union Oyster House menu!  We started off with the house made, freshly baked cornbread….

So how good is it??  Well take a look at Wendy’s plate a few minutes after getting her cornbread 😉

Okay, so we were starving, so I did not get pictures of our actual meals.  Wendy got the clam chowder (amazing) and I got the broiled sea scallops.  The sea scallops were good, but I guess I am used to “California Cuisine” and these scallops were breaded and heavily buttered, which is not what I am used to.  I tried one little scallop, but my poor tummy just couldn’t handle the heaviness of the food.  The scallops were very good though!  I just have to be careful with food like that.  If you are in Boston, you definitely need to eat here.  And the service was outstanding!!  And the cornbread 🙂 Mmmmmmm.

After our dinner, Wendy and I walked over to Mike’s Pastry!  If there are three things Wendy has to have when she comes to Boston, it’s the cornbread and clam chowder from Union Oyster House and a cannoli (or two or three) from Mike’s Pastry!

Mike’s Pastry was PACKED with people when we went, but the line went fast.  Almost too fast, because there is sooooo much yumminess to take in, I could have spent several more minutes drooling over everything in the bakery cases.

A little sister selfie after getting a box of treats!

And back to our hotel we went, with goodies in hand!

We got three different varieties of cannoli’s: Oreo, mint chocolate chip and hazelnut.  We also got a classic whoopie pie and two humongous cookies.  I was curious to try a traditional whoopie pie after recently making my own, without ever having had one!

Wendy LOVED the mint chocolate chip cannoli and said it tasted like mint chocolate chip ice cream in a cannoli shell.  I tried the Oreo cannoli…IT WAS THE BEST DESSERT I HAVE EVER HAD!!!  Yes, that deserved all capital letters 😉  I am lactose intolerant, so I only had a few bites, but those two bites were amazing.  I let Wendy have the other cannoli’s and she ranked the mint chocolate chip as number one, then the hazelnut cannoli, and the Oreo came in last for her.  But honestly, I don’t think you could wrong with any of the cannoli’s from Mike’s Pastry!

A cookie bigger than your hand!

Mmmmm…so the cookies.  I am a cookie kind of girl.  It is my dessert of choice.  But I like an ooey-gooey, under baked cookie.  These cookies were a disappointment.  I had like a few bites of the sugar cookie, which was way better than the M&M chocolate chip cookie.  Yes, looks are deceiving, because that M&M cookie looked amazing, but tasted…….ehhh.  The whoopie pie was consistent with the texture of the one I made, so at least I knew I got mine right, but I wasn’t impressed with the whoopie pie from Mike’s.  It was bland.  Like the cookies…just not a lot of flavor.

But go to Mike’s Pastry!  Get a cannoli or two…it’s what Mike’s Pastry is known for and what they do best!!  Just make sure you bring cash!  Mike’s Pastry is CASH only!!  Click HERE to check out all the varieties of cannoli’s Mike’s Pastry makes!  Our bounty of cannoli’s and cookies set me back about $22.

DAY #2

Okay…so my breakfast both days I was in Boston, was a protein bar I brought with me from home.  Wendy was off to work super early, and I am a get-up-and-eat-breakfast-immediately kind of person.  Plus, I did  not have much desire to go out in the cold to eat by myself #iamboring #lazyaf 😉

Lunch made up for my boring breakfast.  So good!

I met up with Wendy for lunch, while I took a break from shopping and Wendy took a break from work (if you call sending work emails during lunch, a break).  Wendy and I found a cute little bistro on Newbury Street that looked good to both of us, so we stopped in!  Roost Bistro.  But WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THERE.  I was worried for a sec….but I think even though it was noon, and lunch time, Bostonians maybe eat later??  I don’t know, but our food was AMAZING.  Again…no pictures of our food…sorry!  Starving and hangry!

I had a salad, which was plain romaine lettuce, the best tomatoes I have ever eaten in may entire life and grilled chicken breast.  I don’t like salad dressing, so I sprinkled just a little salt and pepper on my salad.  I ate it all and it was soooooo good.  I am still dreaming about those tomatoes!!

Wendy got a cup of tomato basil soup and half a caprese sandwich, which had eggplant, tomato, mozzarella, basil, arugula and pesto on a toasted baguette.  She ate all of her lunch too.  Clean yo plate club over here!  I definitely recommend Roost Bistro if you are looking for a yummy lunch on Newbury Street.

Oh yeah…had to stop into Sugar Heaven.  I didn’t buy anything.  I just really wanted a picture in front of the sign.

Wendy had a work dinner that night, so I was on my own for dinner.  Bummer.  Sooooooo I had a protein bar for dinner.  It was coooooold and raining and I didn’t want to go eat by myself.  Don’t judge 😉

DAY #3

Protein bar for breakfast!  With black coffee, made in the Keurig, in our hotel room. I’m lazy, remember? Annnnnd kind of cheap 😉

Once all the touristy stuff started to open up, I ventured out to explore.  I wound up at Quincy Market!

Quincy Market is like an amazing hall of food vendors and restaurants.  Every kind of cuisine you can imagine, plus the Boston classics!  You just walk up and down the hall, buy whatever looks good to you, and then go sit in the common eating area.

I was wanting to sit down somewhere a little more quiet than the common eating area, and found Ned Devine’s Irish Pub.  Ned Devine’s is upstairs in the Market building.  It was perfect!  Guess what I got for lunch?!

Hey, at least I took a picture!  Lettuce, cherry tomatoes and grilled chicken breast.  Clean eats.  The salad was yummy and the service at Ned’s was great!  I definitely recommend Ned Devine’s!!

Ned Devine’s Irish Pub – 1 Faneuil Hall, Boston MA

After an afternoon of doing touristy stuff, it was time to head to the airport, to head home.  Wendy and I needed to eat dinner before our flight, so our choices were limited to what was at Boston Logan International Airport.  We decided on Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar and Grill.

So this is one restaurant I am going to tell you to skip…eat somewhere else if you are stuck eating at the Boston Airport.  The waitress was terse and kind of rude when I inquired about the chicken on my salad (yes—-another grilled chicken salad for me).  Plus it took FOREVER to get our food.  Wendy had a veggie burger and fries and said her food was good.  But the service was just lacking and we kind of felt forgotten about.

And that’s it folks!  I promise that on my next adventure, I will take more food photos and not eat so many protein bars 😉

My recommendations of must-eat places in Boston: cornbread and anything from Union Oyster House, cannoli’s from Mike’s Pastry and Roost Bistro for a delightful lunch!

If you have been to Boston, where do I need to eat next time I go??  I obviously need to research breakfast spots!

XOXO,

Kelly

Dang! Wish I knew about Flour Bakery before I went! I would have gone there for sure! I love the Ferry Building in SF, but have never been to Chelsea Market (that is my dream trip) or to the one in LA. Next time I head down south, I will have to hit that up! Have a great day! XOXO 🙂
