How To Make A Deco Mesh Wreath

I love crafts almost as much as I love baking….so today we are taking a break from all things sweet, so I can share a tutorial on how to make a deco mesh wreath.  I have made several of these deco mesh wreaths for myself, and family and friends, over the years, and I get asked all the time how to make them.  Today I will teach you how to make a deco mesh wreath, and I have step-by-step directions (((with pictures!!!))) to make it easy for you to make your own!

Last week I made twenty, yes…TWENTY, deco mesh wreaths that were used as centerpieces for a Peace Officer Memorial Event.  So you may think I might be sick of making deco mesh wreaths, but apparently not, because I decided I really wanted to make an American flag inspired wreath for my front door.  Because #merica y’all!  Plus I will keep my flag inspired wreath up from Memorial Day through the 4th of July.

You can use whatever colors you want for your wreath, to make it any theme you want.  I have a deco mesh wreath that I put up on my front door for Spring, that is made with pretty pastel colors.  So make this wreath however you want!

I got my supplies at Hobby Lobby but most craft stores carry the wreath bases and deco mesh.  I only used one roll of each of the deco meshes pictured below (I wasn’t sure how far each roll would get me and I hate running out of supplies mid project).

SUPPLIES:

One 16-inch deco mesh wreath base (or 16-inch wire wreath and pipe cleaners attached to mimic the deco mesh wreath below)

One roll of 10-inch x 30-feet deco mesh

One roll of 5-1/2-inch x 10-yards deco mesh (in an accent color)

One roll of wired ribbon

Lay your wreath base down flat, so the outside portion sits flush and the inside portion is elevated.  Push all the ties so they are positioned straight up:

Unwrap your larger roll (the 10-inch roll) of deco mesh and gather the end together:

Fold the end over, so it creates a small loop (to hide the ends that fray):

Starting on the inside portion of the wreath, attach the loop into the middle of one of the ties and twist, so the loop is securely in place:

Working along the inside portion of the wreath only, make a loop approximately 3-inches long and attach it to the next tie.  Twist to secure the loop into place.  Leave all of your ties in the “up” position until you are completely done, because this wreath is all about adding layers.

Continue to make loops, attaching the loops along the inside portion of the wreath first.  Once you get back to the tie that has your starter loop, add a loop to cover that gap, and then move on to the next tie that is on the outer portion of the wreath:

Working along the outer portion of the wreath, add 3-inch loops to each tie, twisting the ties to secure the loops into place:

Now that all of the ties on both the inner and outer portion of the wreath have loops, you may notice there are gaps in the deco mesh coverage.  That’s where the layering comes in.

Take the deco mesh and make loops, criss-crossing from the outside layer to the inner layer.  To do this, you take the mesh loop tied at the inner tie (shown at arrow #1) and attach it to the tie on the outer portion (shown at arrow #2):

Continue to add loops, criss-crossing throughout the wreath, until the wreath is fully and equally covered by loops.  You may have leftover mesh (I didn’t use the entire roll).  Once you are done adding mesh, cut the mesh and fold over the mesh just like you did in step #1, and attach securely in between one of the ties and twist.  Here’s my wreath after adding the large roll of deco mesh:

Next, unwrap your smaller roll of deco mesh (the 5-1/2-inch roll).  Gather the end, fold over into a small loop, and place into the middle of one of the ties, working with the ties that are more towards the middle of the deco mesh already on the wreath.  Make a small loop and attach to the closest tie next to where you started.  Continue making loops, and attaching the deco mesh loops onto the ties, all the way across the top of the middle portion of the wreath:

Add just one layer of your accent deco mesh.  When you reach your starting point, cut the deco mesh, fold over into a small loop and secure the loop in one of the ties.  I went back over my wreath with more of the primary deco mesh to fill in any spots I thought needed more “fluff.”  You can do that by cutting 3-inch loops and securing them to the ties.

You have a couple of different options for adding ribbon to your wreath (or don’t add any ribbon at all).  You can add just one color of ribbon or use two different colors of ribbon at each tie.  First, cut ribbon in 2-inch pieces:

Dovetail the ends of the ribbon by folding the ribbon in half and cutting the bottom of each ribbon at an angle (I do several pieces of ribbon at a time to make it go quicker):

Dovetailed:

If using two different colors of ribbon like shown above, you will hold the pieces together and then place them in the middle of one of the ties.  Twist the tie, securing the ribbon pieces into place, and then arrange the ribbon so it covers the tie:

Continue to add ribbon throughout the wreath, adding the ribbon at every tie or every other tie.  I went back and forth over the ribbon and if I wanted to use it, and then what color to use.  I ended up using just the red and white striped ribbon in my wreath.  After you add the ribbon (or don’t if you don’t want to!), gently pull all the ties back to the back of the wreath.  Fluff your deco mesh to hide the ties and to make sure the wreath is even on all sides.  And you are done!

Go hang your masterpiece proudly on your front door!  I added a sign, by just hanging the wreath onto the wreath hook first, and then hanging the sign in the middle, using the wreath hook.  I change signs out with the holidays….so the 4th of July will have a different sign up.  I feel like the sign adds that finishing touch to the wreath…..but then again, you know me and my love of crazy, over-the-top stuff 🙂

I hope this tutorial was easy enough to follow.  I would have done a video tutorial of this, but #1. Me on video…nooooo and #2. I needed both hands to make this thang!  I am totally loving this wreath on my door for Memorial Day…makes me smile when I pull up to the house 🙂 #merica

If you have any questions, or if I can make anything clearer, leave me a comment below!  I hope you enjoyed this little craft project.

Don’t worry….I’ll be back tomorrow with something yummy for your tummy 🙂

XOXO,

Kelly

Kelly, this is so pretty! You’re so dang talented. I’m wondering it baking and crafting share some kind of gene, because I love both too :). Happy Wednesday, my friend!
