Crockpot Split Pea Soup

This healthy, crockpot, split pea soup is full of creamy pea flavor with carrots, celery and ham added for even more flavor.  If you have 5 minutes and a crockpot, then you can have homemade split pea soup!  No stirring even required…just dump the ingredients into the crockpot, set it to cook and go on with your day.  And then boom!  A hot and healthy dinner ready to be dished up for the family.

This split pea soup recipe is a family favorite and is a great recipe to use your leftover ham in, but you can always buy a ham steak and cut that into chunks for this recipe too.  My split pea soup recipe is healthy because it is full of vegetables and lean ham, with no dairy or fat added to it.

To make this soup even healthier, I added turmeric powder to it.  Totally optional, but turmeric powder has some awesome health benefits and gives the soup a nice earthy punch.  I used Rodelle Organic Ground Turmeric in my split pea soup.

To make this soup, just add the ingredients to your crockpot, one layer at a time.

Pour the chicken broth in last, cover and cook.  You pick whether you want to cook on high for a shorter amount of time, or on low, for those days when you throw this together in the morning and are at work all day. I cooked my soup on high for 4-1/2 hours and it was PERFECT.

Print Recipe
Serves: 4 Cooking Time: 4-10 hours

Ingredients

  • 1 (16-ounce) package dried green split peas, picked through and rinsed
  • 2 cups diced lean ham
  • 1 cup sliced baby carrots
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 2 whole celery stalks (with leaves), chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric powder (I used Rodelle)—-optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups chicken broth

Instructions

1

Layer the ingredients in your crockpot in the order given, pouring the broth in last. Do not stir the ingredients.

2

Cover the crockpot and cook on high for 4-5 hours or on low for 8-10 hours (or until peas are very soft).

3

Once soup is done, remove the lid and throw away the bay leaf. Stir the soup and serve hot.

Notes

Leftover soup can be poured into an airtight container and refrigerated for several days. Recipe yields four large bowls of soup, or eight smaller side portions.

XOXO,

Kelly

I love hearty soups and stews! When I make potato soup it is rich and creamy. I always make two batches and one I add salmon to it. Love salmon stew! But my daughter would rather have potato soup so two batches! Freezes well so lasts a week or two. Love all of your recipes!

I love that you put turmeric in your soup. I am always looking for new ways to use more turmeric. I guess that the older we get the smarter we get. Mostly because we are always looking for ways to feel better and for food ideas that serve us well!
