Homemade Grain Free Dog Treats

Three ingredients are all you need to make super easy, grain free dog treats!  These dog treats are a cheap and healthy alternative to buying dog treats at the store.  And if you have a dog with food allergies like I do, then this recipe is perfect!  Banana, peanut butter and coconut flour are all you need to make your dog one happy puppy!  So today I am taking a break from the yummy recipes I normally share for us humans, to share with you a recipe to make your faithful, furry friend!

You guys have all met my Yorkshire Terrier, Jack, right?  Well I make all my desserts from scratch, so that got me thinking…why all these store bought dog treats?!  Plus his treats are EXPENSIVE to buy.  Jack is on a grain-free, chicken-free diet.  He wasn’t always such a princess….but a few years back, I started noticing Jack was getting very dry, flaky skin.  After talking with my dog groomer, she recommended a grain-free, chicken-free diet for Jack.  Since putting Jack on his special diet, his skin is back to normal!

When I go into the pet store to buy Jack treats, I swear I am in there for over an hour trying to find a treat that is within his diet restrictions and that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.  I mean I already have a Great Dane that eats me out of house and home!  I think I spend more time and money shopping for food for my two boys, than I do for me!  Hahaha.  So I am loving this easy recipe to make dog treats.  And Mr. Picky (aka: Jack) approved of them 🙂

You can cut your dog treats out with a dog bone cookie cutter if you have one, or just cut them into squares.  Trust me…the dogs don’t care what shape they are!

Homemade Grain Free Dog Treats

Print Recipe
Serves: 10 Cooking Time: 10-12 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 medium ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut flour

Instructions

1

Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

2

In a medium sized bowl, mash the banana. Stir the peanut butter into the banana, until completely incorporated. Add the coconut flour and stir into the banana-peanut butter mixture until a dough forms.

3

Pour the dough out onto the parchment lined cookie sheet and roll the dough out to approximately 1/2-inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shaped treats or cut into squares.

4

Bake treats in 350-degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Remove the treats from the oven once they are golden brown. Let treats rest on the cookie sheet until they are set and then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Notes

I made my treats softer because my dog is older, and has a hard time with the super crunchy treats. Bake your treats a few minutes longer if your dog prefers a crunchier treat. Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature. Treats stay fresh for several days.

These dog treats smelled pretty good while they were baking!  I mean it’s just peanut butter, banana and coconut flour, so yeah!  Oh…and coconut flour is supposed to be great for a dogs coat and for keeping fleas away!

Jack!!!  Time for a treat!!

Jack loved these treats!!  And I love how cheap and easy they were to make!  Looking for a pup to test these treats out on? Any of these adorableYorkshire Terriers would make great taste testers!

But we can’t leave Mookie out from getting a dog treat!  He wanted to smile for the camera before he got his treat 🙂  Mookie liked the treats too, and sometimes I think he can be even pickier about treats than Jack!

PuppySpot created some fun graphics about how dogs improve our health, and I couldn’t agree more!  So of course I had to share them with you!

I love my boys and I am so excited I got to veer from my usual recipes, to share this dog treat with you today!  If you make this, let me know what you—errr the dogs—think of these treats!  And tell me below what kind of dog you have and if they have any food allergies too!

XOXO,

Kelly

I love the cookie cutter. I would probably just make my dog treats in whatever shape I had. That is so nice of you to make “bones” for your dog! I like this recipe. Our dog is also quite old and she does deserve a treat like this. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

Thank you Amy! I like this recipe for older dogs because you can bake them soft, so it’s easier for them to eat! XOXO 🙂

I frequently make homemade treats for my Sheltie and his dog park buddies. I’m always alert to allergies as I have dealt with allergies myself all my life! Recently, we have been trying out grainfree eating for my Sheltie. I was wondering what I was going to sub for the whole wheat or oat flour I usually use. Coconut flour! Great idea! Thanks for the recipe.

I followed this recipe and my dough was too moist, I believe. They stuck to the parchment paper and I had to toss them. I will try again without parchment paper and perhaps increase the coconut flour.

Yes. I would add more coconut flour until you reach a firmer consistency. Maybe your banana was bigger than mine. Also I just used regular peanut butter. If you use almond butter or something more oily than regular PB, then you would need to adjust the flour.

Thank you for the response. I used powdered peanut butter. May need to adjust a bit for that as well
