Mocha Chip Buttercream Frosting

From scratch, coffee and chocolate flavored buttercream frosting, with chocolate shavings and mini chocolate chips.  Frosting that is based off that drink you know and love from Starbucks!  Put this frosting between two cookies, on top of brownies or frost an entire cake.  Or just eat it with a spoon 🙂  Easy, from scratch buttercream frosting recipe that will make you go “Mmmmmmm.”

I made this frosting to frost my BEST Chocolate Cake, but it would be delicous on vanilla cake or anything that goes with mocha flavors!

Mocha Chip Buttercream Frosting

Print Recipe
Serves: 3 Cups Cooking Time: 0-minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • pinch of salt
  • 4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup freshly brewed coffee, room temperature
  • 4-6 drops Lorann Coffee Keoke flavoring, optional (see note below)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate shavings
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

1

In a medium sized bowl, sift together the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Set aside.

2

In the bowl of a stand mixer, affixed with the paddle attachment, cream the butter on medium-high speed. Slowly add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder to the butter, a cup at a time. Add two tablespoons of heavy whipping cream to the mixture and continue adding the sugar and cocoa. Add the salt and two remaining tablespoons of heavy whipping cream. Slowly stream in the coffee with the mixer on low speed. Add the drops of coffee flavoring (if using). Once incorporated, increase the mixer speed to medium-high and mix for 5-minutes, until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

3

Fold in the chocolate shavings and chocolate chips. Frost onto cooled cake or cupcakes or on top of brownies or in between two cookies.

Notes

Frosting makes enough to frost a two layer round cake or one 9x13-inch cake. The Lorann Coffee Keoke flavoring is found with candy making supplies at craft stores and baking supply stores. It is highly concentrated flavoring and adds an extra coffee flavor to this frosting.

Here’s my frosted cake with those chocolate shavings on full display!

I also put sprinkles on my cake….because.  Ummmm sprinkles!!!

Hi Judy! You don’t have to have fresh brewed. Sometimes I use those little single instant coffee packs to make a single cup of coffee. I just heat up a cup of water in the microwave and then stir in my instant coffee! So do that 🙂 Let me know if you make this. Have an awesome day my friend!!

Oh my gosh, this looks so good. When I first saw your picture I actually thought that it was ice cream. I’m still thinking that it may be a good idea to eat it like ice cream!
