Crack Balls

Little balls of addictive goodness, made using cake scraps and buttercream frosting, dipped in chocolate and rolled in toffee chunks.  Crack Balls because they are addicting.  This is a fun little “recipe” to make when you have cake that has dried out or cake scraps from leveling or shaping a cake.  We don’t waste that kind of goodness in my kitchen!

So there I was…leveling my BEST Chocolate Cake, getting ready to frost it, when I looked down to see that there was a lot of cake goodness that I had cut away to level my cakes.  Do I throw the scraps away?  Why would I do that??  I guess I could have nibbled on it while I worked, but then I had the idea to make a cake pop of sorts out of my cake scraps.  This recipe would also work if you have cake that is a few days old and has dried out.

Make these the next time you have some leftover cake and frosting!  Mush up (technical term) your cake and frosting and scoop into balls.  The amount of frosting needed will depend on how moist your cake is.  The balls will be a little wet, so pop them in the freezer for 30-minutes before coating in chocolate.

Get your chocolate and toppings ready to go…I used chopped chunks of B. toffee to roll my balls in:

Crack Balls

Print Recipe
Serves: 12 Balls Cooking Time: 5-minutes

Ingredients

  • **The exact amount of ingredients will depend on how much cake you are using**
  • 1-1/2 cups chocolate cake scraps
  • 1 tablespoon mocha chip buttercream frosting
  • 2 cups chocolate candy melts or chocolate chips
  • 1-1/2 cups finely chopped toffee (or use sprinkles, nuts or your favorite candy)

Instructions

1

In a small bowl mix together the cake scraps and frosting. Add enough frosting so that the balls are moist, but not so wet that you can't form them into balls.

2

Use a small cookie scoop to scoop the mixture into balls. Place balls on parchment paper and freeze for 30-minutes.

3

After balls have chilled, melt the chocolate in the microwave, stopping every 30-seconds to stir. Dip balls, one at a time, in the melted chocolate and then immediately roll in your topping. Place balls on parchment paper to set.

Notes

Option to store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or at room temperature, depending on your preference.

And Boom!  Crack Balls!!

Put your balls in a bowl and enjoy!

James was at work when I made these, so I texted him that I was stopping by the firehouse on my way to the gym.  I pulled up, rolled my window down and handed him two baggies of Crack Balls.  James: “Wow.  What are these?”  Me: “Crack Balls.”  James: “That’s an inappropriate name.”  Me: “When have I ever been appropriate?”  James: “True hahahaha.”  James texted me later to confirm that my Crack Balls are definitely addictive.

Yes I am inappropriate.  If you know me then you are laughing right now.  If you don’t, then I will probably get a bunch of people who unsubscribe from the blog.  I just have a sense of humor folks…don’t take life so seriously 😉

So what do you do with leftover cake scraps and frosting??  What would you roll your balls in?  Leave me a comment below!

XOXO,

Kelly

I’m not going to lie, you had me the moment you typed “rolled in toffee”. Also when you wrote “crack” and “balls”. I’m trying to avoid sugary foods but you better believe I’m going to plow a pan of these balls on my cheat day! Pinning!

This reminds me that I have gingerbread cake scraps hanging out in my freezer! Maybe I’ll have to make cake balls for Easter…with lemon cream cheese frosting!
