National Harbor Maryland Travel Guide

I traveled to National Harbor, Maryland in April for a work conference. It is a small little city and perfect for a day trip. I was there for three days, but worked those days with only the evenings to explore. In this article I am sharing restaurant recommendations and fun things to do if you find yourself in National Harbor.

I stayed at the Gaylord National Resort on the Potomac for my work trip. Hands down the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. And with all the amenities, you could stay an entire trip without having to leave the hotel.

After my day of meetings, it was just a short walk to downtown and the harbor. There are a ton of cute shops to peruse and an independent bookstore, Mahogany Books, that I had to spend some time in of course! But there are candy shops, boutiques and fast casual restaurants flanking the three block radius of downtown.

I was traveling alone and trying to keep my trip cheap. I ordered a sandwich from Potbelly two of the nights I was there and went back to my hotel room to eat it in bed, watching Netflix, in my pajamas. Yes. I’m a wild one!

One night I did decide I had to at least go to a nice restaurant and enjoy a steak and a glass of wine. I went to McCormick’s and Schmick’s and had the most amazing waiter, even though the service was slow and the restaurant was loud.

I ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, the Maryland Crab Soup (when in Maryland!) and the filet mignon with haricot verts. The food was good. The Maryland Crab Soup basically tasted like the Campbell’s vegetable condensed soup with a few small chunks of crab on top. The price of the food was definitely not worth the quality. But it was a decent meal.

And you can’t leave National Harbor without going on the Capital Wheel at sunset! Worth the wait and the line to go when the sun sets. Otherwise go during the day. I would say there isn’t much point to going at night since you can only see the lights of the city and DC.

And that is it! After I finished up my work conference, I headed to Washington DC for a few days to explore there since I had never been before.
