Stepping Up Sunday Desserts

Looking to step up your Sunday family meal?  Perhaps desserts aren’t your strong point and you’re looking for some sweet treat recipes to make that are going to round off that amazing home-cooked main course, and send everyone to the couch for a post-meal nap.

Today we are looking at some perfect Sunday desserts, the kind that even the fussiest of eaters will finish their vegetables for! Take a look at some mouth watering ideas and get to baking your best Sunday dessert yet.

Popcorn Pots

The winning combination of popcorn and salted caramel is a crowd pleaser every time. The beauty of this dessert is its ease of preparation, which will need to be done first thing in the morning or the night before.  Take 1-2/3 cups of heavy cream and pour the cream into a pan along with 3/4 cup of milk. Put 2/3 cup of popcorn (your choice of flavor) into the pan and bring to a boil. Once mixture reaches a boil, remove from heat and let the mixture chill overnight in the refrigerator.

Next soften two gelatin sheets in cold water for just a few minutes. While they’re soaking, strain the cream mixture and throw away the popcorn. Start to re-heat the cream. Then add the gelatin sheets and stir until melted. Take off the heat and set aside.

Finally, take 4 tablespoons of your store bought caramel sauce and add a tiny amount of sea salt, until you’re happy with the ratio. Add the caramel to the bottom of two tall glasses, pour in the cream mixture and top off with a few pieces of fresh popcorn.

Mama’s Apple Pie

This is one that your young bakers can help with, so gather the family to help create this family favorite.  And make sure you serve with good quality vanilla ice cream!

Preheat your oven to 350-degrees and prepare the pastry dough. Sift 1 cup of all purpose flour and mix with 10 tablespoons of margarine or butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs (add additional flour or water if needed to reach consistency). Slowly add 3 tablespoons of cold water, mix and roll into a ball. Wrap and leave in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Peel, core and dice three large cooking apples and place into a baking dish. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of honey and a pinch of cinnamon over the apples and add two tablespoons of cold water. Roll out pastry and place over the top of the baking dish, trimming the excess. Make a small hole for the air to escape, glaze with a beaten egg and cook for around 30 minutes.

With just these two recipes alone, your Sunday dessert game will be transformed. And if you’re still in need of inspiration then check out this vanilla cream pie recipe that will almost make you consider skipping the dinner altogether!

Enjoy gathering the family together to eat, swap stories, enjoy great food and great company. Savor the reactions you get from your satisfied family members after they try your desserts.  Get your younger chefs in the kitchen to help with the baking and inspire a whole new generation of tomorrow’s bakers with desserts that are to die for.

XOXO,

Kelly
