Three Ways to Improve Your Cuisine Skills

Since the beginning of human history, humans have prepared food for themselves and their families. In more recent history, billions of us were ordered to stay home for weeks or even months on end. This led to many of us learning to cook – sometimes for the very first time.

Not everyone has a natural flair for cooking, which is totally fine. Whether you’re a complete novice or a budding home-chef with a little room for improvement, read on for more, because in this article, we are going to give you three tips to help improve your cooking skills. These three tips can be applied to any level of experience, so give them all a go today.

Follow Free Recipes

There’s clearly no better place to start learning to cook than the internet. There are free recipes all over the web, in all kinds of cuisines. For example, we had a browse of the recipes on Corrie cooks and learned just how many things even an amateur chef can make with an instant pot! These sorts of recipes are both simple and educational, as you start to learn classic meat and vegetable pairings, sauces, and flavorings.

The great thing about online recipes is that they teach you these basics. Once you start to learn these, you can begin to develop your own skills and understanding. Try a recipe from a website once or twice, then try putting your own spin on it. For example, add some spice to a simple dish, or mix two recipes to create something unique. At this point, you realize you’re on your own and no longer reliant on recipes – though they’re always great to come back to.

Learn Proper Knife Skills

Something that many new chefs struggle with, and something that actually slows a lot of cooking down, is knife skills. It’s also rather dangerous to be cutting slippery foods like white onions inefficiently. To cut properly, first work on your knife grip. Your forefinger and thumb should actually be gripping the base of the blade, not the handle. The three other fingers remain on the handle. Choking up on the knife like this gives you more control.

Then, with your non-cutting hand, get that thumb out of the way! Hold food with your fingertips and cut alongside them, with them all in a neat row. The thumb should be placed parallel, behind the row of fingertips, to provide stability and avoid slipping and chopping it!

Season Sufficiently

Finally, don’t be scared of salt. Done properly, seasoning throughout the cooking process will bring more and more flavor out of your food. Many professional chefs recommend seasoning periodically throughout a recipe, rather than all at the beginning or end of the process. This means the seasoning can slowly help bring more flavor through your dish, adding a real roundness and richness to your cooking. Throwing all the salt in at the end, however, would mask all that effort.

With these three tips, you can start improving your culinary skills quickly. Before you know it, you’ll be impressing friends and family alike with your amazing recipes!
