Top Cake Trends To Watch Out For

Americans have a sweet tooth, and they are consuming more desserts more often – as reported in research published by food industry research specialist, Technomic. In fact, around 40% of those surveyed said that they tucked into desserts after meals at least twice a week, with cakes and pies being enjoyed without fail on special occasions like birthdays and the festive season. If you are an unabashed cake lover who is looking forward to the next time you can surprise the family with a home-baked delight, what are some of the hottest trends taking over the baking world?

Black Ice-Cream Cakes

Ice-cream cakes are an all-time favorite in the warmer seasons of the year, and if you’re a home baker then you may have tried fun recipes from The Ultimate Ice Cream Cake Book by Kelly Mikolich, featuring a host of refreshing and beautifully presented cakes. Some cakes blend both traditional cakes with flour (such as chocolate) with ice-cream such as mint chocolate chip. If you want to play around with colors and expectations, why not incorporate one of the hottest new ice-cream types on the block: black ice-cream? This is simply chocolate ice-cream made with black chocolate powder, which can be added to a white ice-cream base. Pair this up with white cake for a stunning and elegant creation.

Multi-Section Cakes

If you have a large family then you know that it can be very hard to please everyone with just one cake. These days, catering companies and bakeries are offering buyers the chance to take home a multi-section cake that might comprise one cake that actually has two halves with different flavors, or even cakes sectioned up in terms of décor and theme for a little extra artistry. It isn’t difficult to create a two-or-more-flavored cake, providing you have good measurement tools. To create unique looks for different sections, use spare items from food deliveries, especially those containing sweets you may not eat on their own. If you enjoy boxes or food sets with sweets, for instance, divide the sweets up by color and try color blocking to differentiate sections. You can also blend or crush these ingredients to create multi-colored sections to contrast with other monochromatic portions of your cake.

Plant-Based Cakes

The popularity of plant-based food is on the rise, with the number of Americans adopting this lifestyle now surpassing 9.7 million. It’s easy to substitute nearly every ingredient that makes cakes so popular. Think nut butters instead of butter, and coconut cream or hazelnut milk instead of eggs. For decoration, incorporate herbs and botanical ingredients such as tiny edible flowers, rosemary, or sliced fruit and nuts. To really get your cake noticed, try to include a few superfoods in your ingredient list. Think matcha, raw chocolate, and/or therapeutic-grade edible essential oils such as bergamot, lemon or orange.

There are many trends overtaking the food world – from nostalgic cakes such as Victoria sponges, right through to more innovative creations such as crosses between different types of pastries and cakes. Three trends that some of the savviest restaurants are bakeries are enticing diners with include black desserts, multi-section cakes, and plant-based desserts. It is easy to incorporate these trends by making small changes – including the use of black chocolate instead of the traditional brown.

Have fun playing around with these trends and creating your own masterpiece!  Or at least something that is delicious!

XOXO,

Kelly
